Guatemala began to develop its coffee industry in the earl 1800,s. By 1859 over a half million coffee trees had been planted around Antigua, Coban, Franijanes and San Marcos. At this time the country was exporting close to 400 quintales (100 lb bags) annually to Europe. By 1880 coffee accounted for 90% of Guatemala’s exports.
